US Standing Liberty Quarter Coins

The Liberty Standing Quarter, also known as the Standing Liberty Quarter, is a coin that was minted in the United States from 1916 to 1930. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and artistic designs in American numismatic history.

The coin was designed by sculptor Hermon MacNeil, who won a competition held by the United States Mint to create a new design for the quarter-dollar coin. The obverse (front) of the coin features a depiction of Lady Liberty standing with her right hand holding a shield and her left hand extending an olive branch. The design was intended to symbolize America's readiness for war but also its desire for peace. The reverse (back) of the coin showcases an eagle in flight, with its wings outstretched.

The initial release of the Liberty Standing Quarter in 1916 faced some criticism due to the depiction of Liberty's exposed breast. The design was considered too risqué for the time, and it was revised in 1917 to cover Liberty's chest with a chainmail vest. This modified version, often referred to as the "Type 2," continued to be minted until 1930.

The Liberty Standing Quarter underwent several changes during its production. The composition of the coin changed from 90% silver and 10% copper in 1916 to 90% silver and 10% copper/nickel from 1925 onward. The diameter of the coin was reduced slightly in 1925 to address stacking and wear issues.

The Liberty Standing Quarter series saw limited mintages during its entire run. The lowest mintage occurred in 1923 when only 1,360,000 quarters were produced, making it a highly sought-after and valuable date. The highest mintage year was 1920, with over 27 million quarters minted.

In 1931, the Liberty Standing Quarter was replaced by the Washington Quarter, featuring a portrait of George Washington, to commemorate the bicentennial of his birth. The Washington Quarter design has remained in use with some modifications to the design over the years.

Today, Liberty Standing Quarters are highly collectible, especially those in higher grades and with low mintages. They are admired for their artistic beauty and historical significance, and they continue to be sought after by coin collectors and numismatists around the world.
