Insert Passage: 

The Two-Cent coin is one of the shortest-lived issues of US Coinage, from 1864 to 1873. Designed by Mint Master, James B. Longacre, the motto “In God We Trust” appeared for the first time on any coin.


Some Civil War soldiers used the Two-Cent coins as the first-ever dog tags. They would smooth and inscribe their names and home town on the planchet.
